Trying to build a gaming rig for my 8 year old daughter but also checking Craigslist and I talked a guy down for this “Omen gaming desktop (model: 870-224). Comes with original box and most of original packaging. Includes the computer, original mouse, original keyboard, power cable, and a monitor cable (no monitor included).” She plays minecraft, fortnite, roblox, and does homework i know this is plenty powerfull but is $500 a pretty decent deal? 7th gen i5 7400 chip, 8gb dd4, gtx 1060 3gb gpu. Assuming it is as advertised, that sounds like a decent deal. The processor is quite solid.

The RAM and video card leave a bit to be desired (16GB and a 6GB 1060 would be what I would recommend if you had the choice ), but I think are passable (and are upgradable if need be.)

The hard drive will be slow and crappy. I’d look for a ~$30 ~25 0GB SSD and do a fresh install of Windows on to that (may be a little tricky because the machine is used, but should be possible), then once that’s working format the HDD and keep it for storage.

I’m pretty sure it would be a better system than what you could build for $500 though.

I think it’s a decent deal. Prices for these are all over the map, but $500 for a used model is on the low end. A 1060 3GB can still do some solid gaming and is definitely plenty powerful for those games.

It's not bad. I'd still recommend building your own PC but see if you can haggle a bit more.

Amazon has a refurb for $800. It’s a decent computer for the money. It’ll run Windows 10, and that graphics card will perform.

It’s okay. Not too amazing cons idering it’s a private sale though. But you could definitely do worse. If you’re okay with it being a “Don’t touch it until it dies” type system then you should get 3 to 4 years out of it. The 1060 3GB is a mediocre card though.

Or maybe I’m just the type that hunts for deals too hard.....It’ll be fine, my inner geek is just flaring up and would push to see if you can’t find a non-3GB 1060 or maybe find a radeon RX580 system.

I have a freebie 240 ssd sitting on stand by s o that’s my plan for sure . And this is for a kid who’s most demanding ga me is fortnite. She’s currently playing on an gen 4 i5 with 8gb ram and on board video so this should blow her mind. My plan is that if I can’t get the original win key I’ll just buy one from eBay. They sell cheap like less than 10 bucks. Kinda gangster but the pc already paid for Windows so if I have to reload and have trouble I don’t have a problem with that method. Upgrading in the feature would be fun really want her to learn how to tear it apart and rebuild it.

Just looking at what I might do for a cheap gaming build, it would go something like this:

Ryzen 3 1200: $70

B450 Motherboard: $70

16GB DDR4: $75

8GB Radeon 580: $170

Case: $45

500W Power supply: $25

500GB SSD: $60

Windows 10: $110

Keyboard + Mouse: $20

So if I can add, that’s $645 , or a good deal more than you want to spend. You could cheap out a little more, but you’d have to cut some serious corners to get down to around $500.

Maybe:

8GB DDR4: $40

8GB Radeon 570: $140

Case: $25

250GB SSD or 1TB HDD: $30

That takes you down to ~$535, but it’s not clear that that’s better than the HP. Pretty sure the HP would have a faster processor, while a 8GB 570 should be similar to a 3GB 1060 (though louder and more power hungry).

Not looking for max setting just want it to compete with an Xbox one. She only likes pc gaming but joins her bothers (he's an xboxer) games a lot and she’s at such a disadvantage it’s sad. I tried to use her pc late one night with the plan of ranking her up a bit and it was awful. Completely unplayable. Felt so bad for her. Her bday is soon but Im not rich and don't want to spend too much. One side i say I'm happy she's sticking with pc but on the other hand xbox/ps4's are cheap and easy!

I could certainly build but all my builds end up being 600-700 and still have some major compromises. Keep hoping I get luckly and snag a deal but her bday is coming up and I have to get moving asap.

Keep your eye on woot.com

I got a GTX 1070 l aptop for 1050$ about a year ago and it’s been a hell of a good computer. Desktops should go for 700-800 with similar specs so a good 1060 one will be less still. But their inventory c an change daily.

This is a quick build I put together on PC Part Picker. The CPU and Motherboard come in a combo deal from Microcenter. That’s where the $80 for the Ryzen 5 and the $40 for the Asus B350 board come from. If you couldn’t do that. I would probably swap the 1600 for a Ryzen 3 2200g, the B350 for a B450, and the 16GB of ram for 8GB. That should keep you under your $500 dollar budget.

I think this will do the job. I have a GTX 780, which is spec for spec pretty much on par with the 1060 performance. I was looking at upgrades today since Apex Legends really taxes the heck out of it but I will probably stick with it for a while with the settings pulled back a bit while the price of graphics cards gets more reasonable.

Should be pretty much max settings on the games you listed.

Minecraft, Fork-Knife, and roblox?  The 3 GB 1060 is perfect.

A good deal on that would be $350. I’ve got something pretty equivalent that I’m barely getting nibbles on at $350.

It’s fine for that, today. But I have a feeling the battle royale/massive multiplayer games are going to get a graphics upgrade in the next year or two and that 3GB memory buffer will hit like a derailed train. The 1060 is already 3 years old. The price for the system is fine, but I’d look for something that wouldn’t need to be upgraded in 2 or 3 years if possible. 1070 would be bomb at 600ish dollars and last another year or maybe even two.

I disagree with that for fortnite. They like crossplay, and it runs on the Switch, and no one is complaining about the graphics.

That said, yeah, I’d never buy that card for myself, but I run a lot more than those games.

Oppo discount might cover shipping, though.
